Girls Night Out, Presented by North Kansas City Hospital

NKC Hospital Celebrates ‘Spirit of Women’
by Kellie Houx, Columnist, Copy Editor

North Kansas City Hospital is the only hospital in the metropolitan area that is part of the consortium known as Spirit of Women. In about 55 cities around the nation, women are moving toward the forefront of health care. Membership with this consortium is a realization that hospitals are moving to see women as “powerful healthcare consumers.”

North Kansas City Hospital, says Women’s Services Director Michele Malone, wants to continue to broaden the hospital’s scope of women’s healthcare services. “We want to be a center of excellence, but also provide that outreach programming that serves women intellectually, physically and spiritually. This means combining education with relaxing events such as the upcoming Girls’ Night Out.”

The Oct. 15 event, designed for women 21 and older, starts at the Shark Bar in the Power & Light District with heart-healthy wine and snacks. “There will be lots of health information targeted at women. It’s a happy and enjoyable setting where doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners and dietitians can talk about issues like breast health, women’s heart care and bone health. The doctors, male and female, like this outreach component. They don’t just educate, but inspire. We understand women don’t have a lot of spare time, but we have to get the screenings we need.”

It is past time that women get the attention they deserve, Malone says. “Medical research has been focused on men and the healthcare models don’t fit women. Now the attention is being paid to women. There is broader knowledge on heart disease, the importance of understanding bone density, and how we can improve the overall health and longevity of women.”

There is also a newly opened, modern Level 3 neonatal intensive care unit and the only metro NICU that is designed with the family in mind. Other improvements include remodeling maternity rooms, adding a first-ever lactation store where women from anywhere in the metro can purchase breastfeeding supplies, the creation of a fatigue management program and a women’s imaging center that opened in August within the hospital. Malone says the center is a “physically beautiful space” that has more a feel of a spa. “The center loses the cold medical edge of women’s health care. It may even help take some of the anxiety away as women are scheduled for procedures like mammography or a breast MRI.”

Spirit of Women events will continue, Malone says. There will be a Day of Dance in February called “Dance Your Health Out.” The event will focus on women’s heart health. “We are a heart caring certified hospital. We are celebrating 20 years of performing open-heart surgery. If women don’t come out for much of the Spirit of Women programming, women’s heart health is a critical one to catch.”

It's Time for Back to School.....

|
It's amazing how time flies!!! For our children it's the summers that seem to pass with a blink of an eye and the school year that tends to drag on forever! For all of us grownups, well I can only speak for myself when I say, the older I get, the quicker the years click by!

For example, I just got back in town from attending my 20 year reunion in Urbandale, Iowa. That's right 20 years had passed since I had seen a lot of my classmates that I graduated High School with. At first, when I heard about this memorable occasion I wasn't sure if I wanted to go. But, after I thought about it, I decided what the heck, and I am so glad that I did! Life is a funny thing. No matter how much time goes by, somehow it's very easy to fall back into the emotions that you felt back in high school. Old friends can easily pick up right where they left off even if it was two decades ago. Needless to say, a great time was had by all.

The Northland is no stranger to good times and great memories! Check out the three beautiful women on the cover! Their dance studio has been an icon in the Northland for over 40 years! So many girls/women out there have been touched by this amazing dance school. As a matter of fact, at the last recital they had a bit of a reunion themselves. They asked the girls who were awarded the "Dancer of the Year" for the past 40 years, to come back and be honored on stage! It was amazing to see how many women have been touched by this school!

Please sit back and relax, kick your feet up, maybe even grab a glass of wine when you grab this issue of Home in the Northland. You are in for a treat! From our amazing cover girls to our beautiful home featured, plus the great food at Ginger Sue's! It's all done for you, our reader, so enjoy!

I'm looking forward to our next issue...like I always say, somehow they just keep getting better!

Cheers!

Tina

Be on the look out!!!!

I just went through the final draft of the June/July issue of Home in the Northland before we send it off to the printer and I am grinning ear to ear. It looks so beautiful! I know you are really going to enjoy reading about the very interesting people we found who live in our great community.

Not to mention that the photographs of our beautiful cover girls are breathtaking. We found a wonderful farm up north where we shot the twins. I can't wait for you to see them! The girls are beautiful from the inside out! And, the house we shot is to great to even describe! It was so fun that we shot the upstairs for our home spread and the downstairs and pool area for our fashion spread! Amazing!!!!

I always look forward to hearing your feedback. When you get a copy of the June/July issue please shoot me an email and let me know what you think!

Thanks to those of you who have done exactly that!

Cheers!

And the fun continues....

The First Home in the Northland Magazine Is Done! We Did It!!!!

|
It's amazing when you see the fruits of your labor pay off! I was at the press check last night for our launch issue of Home in the Northland and what I saw was incredible. As a northlander myself, I am so proud of this publication. Not only does it represent the beauty and sophistication of my friends and neighbors but it makes a statement to all of Kansas City. We are a warm friendly community with a ton to offer. I hope everyone in the city gets a chance to look our magazine and venture up north. The invitation is always there and we welcome everyone!

With that said, I'd like to give a huge thank you to all of the advertisers who joined our quest to give the northland a beautiful publication. Your confidence in our vision is so appreciated. And, speaking of appreciation, I got the nicest phone call today from Carol Meierotto. I love Carol and I have the utmost respect for her. She has an amazing store and a lot of wonderful people who work for her. She called me just to ask how everything was going and to tell me how happy she is about the redesign of the magazine. Carol is a strong believer in community and knows how much the northland needed a publication like ours. I really appreciated her vote of confidence, it made my day! Thank you Carol!

I am so lucky to have such great accounts like Meierotto's Fine Jewelery. I can honestly say that ALL of my accounts are really wonderful people!!! Over the years of being in the advertising industry I have meet a lot of great people and made a lot of great friends. I am truly blessed.

One quick note as I wrap things up. One of the exciting things we have changed with the new Home in the Northland Magazine is the way we distribute it. We have decided to pick 30 neighborhoods in the northland and door hang the magazine in a bag. This is an exciting change for us and we think this we benefit you the reader. I mean, I love getting free things delivered right to my door, don't you? We will continue to mail a portion of the issues but the bulk will be delivered right to your door for FREE!!!

To make sure you get a copy you can always subscribe for a small fee. Otherwise, all of our advertisers will have copies ready to hand out at there businesses.

The digital version of the magazine is already online so follow this link and check it out! http://www.homeinthenorthland.com/. One big plus about a digital magazine is that if you see an ad that you like and you want to visit that retailer's website all you have to do is click on their ad. If they do have a website you will be linked right to it! That is soooooo COOL!!!

Again, a big thank you to everyone who made this launch issue such a success! I am proud to be a northlander!

Hello Northlanders! Is there something in the water???

|
Hello Northlanders!

I just found out that four of my friends are pregnant! Wow! It must be in the water!!!! Well, for you wonderful parents out there who are expecting a new addition to your family, congratulations! Aren't we so lucky that we have a store like Lauren Alexandra to decorate our babies' rooms with. Not to mention, once your little bundle of love arrives....the clothes in the store are so cute, it would be a sin not to dress your little prince or princess up in style!

I had a chance to talk with Pam DiCapo, the owner of Lauren Alexandra, she is an amazing women. She has such incredible energy and talent. I know when my girls were little I visited her store in Brookside as often as I could get down there from the northland. Now, us northlanders, don't have to travel far at all. She has made it really convenient for us by opening her second store in Briarcliff Village. I LOVE IT! Everything is so adorable. I found tons of gifts for my expecting friends and I even found some things for my older girls! Jewelry!!! My daughters are really into cute earrings and necklaces and she has tons of really cute pieces!!! She even has rings that have words like "Nana" on them. That's what my girls call my mom so when mother's day rolls around I know what I'll be buying.

Make sure you stop into Lauren Alexandra and tell Pam hello!

And, while you are at Briarcliff Village stop into Design in the City! Mindy, the owner is a good friend of mine and she has impeccable taste. Her store is so chic! I love all of the beautiful things she has for the home. Plus, the clothes she has in there are so fabulous! I get more compliments on the dress I bought there. You will probably find her mom, Sharon, there as well, helping make the store beautiful. What a great mother daughter team!! They are such wonderful people! Make sure you make plans to check it out. I know you will find something you just can't live without!!!

Happy Shopping Northlanders!

My Birthday Dinner at Agave!

|
I love mexican food! It's been my favorite for as long as I can remember! We have a lot of good mexican restaurants here in Kansas City but only a few that I would say are my favorite! The one I would go to the most was a good 30 minute drive from my home here in the northland and I would go there at least once a week! Well, thank goodness I don't have to do that anymore! Now there's an incredibility delicious mexican restaurant right here in the northland, and it's only 5 minutes from my house!!!!!

It's called Agave, and it is officially my new favorite mexican restaurant! You will find them in the Parkville Commons Center right down from Nick and Jake's off 45 hwy. The food is amazing and the service is the best! Justin, the owner is always there to make sure you are enjoying the authentic food they serve you. To me, a test for a mexican restaurant is the salsa. If you don't like the salsa then there's a good chance you won't like the food either. Agave passed my litmus test, the salsa is fantastic and the food is even better.

I did dine there last night for my birthday dinner and it was such a treat! Even the friends my sweetie and I were with commented on how fresh everything is. And, the funny thing was, they had already eaten there for lunch earlier that day! Oops.. they didn't share that with me until we were already seated! LOL... Well, they weren't complaining, they love it almost as much as I do!!!!

Needless to say my birthday dinner was great! Thank you Agave and Justin! We are so lucky to have you in Parkville!

Home in the Northland Readers.....Spring is in the air....are you ready?

|
Thank goodness the weather is warming up! I know this is Kansas City and the weather is crazy but I'm ready to start wearing all of those cute spring clothes I am seeing in our Northland boutiques! And speaking of cute clothes......I have to brag about one of our models featured in our April/May issue! I just watched her last night on ABC's "The Bachelor" and she was wearing the dress from our fashion shoot!!!! That's right our hometown sweetheart Kari looks striking in her yellow dress on the show and in our photo shoot! Can't wait to show you all of the beautiful fashions that she is in!

I was just at Rio Salon & Spa in Parkville yesterday talking with Sonia the owner and I discovered that they are having an incredible sale on laser hair removal! Through the end of March you can take 50% off and their prices are already really affordable! Give them a call and check it out! I know what I am going to be doing with my tax refund money!!! This summer I want to be razor free and confident and Rio Salon is just the place to help me get there! Did I mention that Rio Day Spa and Salon did all the hair and make-up in our fashion shoot! They are amazing!!! Here's the link to their website....http://riosalonandspa.com/

The next time you are in Liberty stop in at Champagne Jewelers and check out their new line of rings and necklaces! They make them out of forks and beautiful stones. I wear mine almost everyday and I always have people stopping me asking me where I got it! Cindy is the owner and is wonderful to work with. Check out her website or give her a call at 816.415.9110!

The First Home in the Northland Magazine Blog!

|
Welcome to the first Home in the Northland Magazine Blog.

We are so excited to share with you all of the hard work we've put into the redesign of this magazine. From attending our beautiful photo shoots to discovering interesting things for our writers to cover, we are always looking for the best of the best in the northland to put in this magnificent new publication.

Okay, if you are getting this email it's because you are on our email list, lucky you! Make sure you keep checking our blog site. We will be putting up new pictures all the time from our photo shoots. Here's what we've been working on so far!

Our first cover northlander is our own Representative Jason Grill, a Democrat, who represents southern Platte County (District 32) in the Missouri House of Representatives. We had so much fun at the photo shoot with him. He is a great guy and really opens up to our writer Tiffiney Baumgarden about growing up in the northland and what politics are like for an up and coming super star politician.

Then, if you are wondering what the hot style will be for spring, Kandie Erickson, our Fashion and Beauty Editor, has some incredible looks you must see in our April/May debut issue. The fashion spread is just breath taking! The best thing about it, you will be able to find all the clothes we used in the shoot, right here in our northland shops.

Plus, if you love shopping at Nell Hills you won't want to miss our columnist Richard Lippincott a designer for Nell Hills. Read his take on on what you can do with your home for spring....it's amazing!

Now, if you love to eat like I do..you have to read our review on the newest and hottest restaurant in the Northland. The food is delicious and the prices are right. But, I am going to make you wait to find out who it is.

And, our very own columnist Dr. Brenda Smith, founder of the Midlife Wellness Center in Briarcliff , has some expert advice on how to stay healthy and vibrant. You won't want to miss her amazing tips.

If all this sounds like something you would like to learn more about then you are in for a treat. We have all of this and so much more in the our debut issue of Home in the Northland Magazine. Look for it on your door or in your favorite retail stores the first of April. Make sure and tell all of your friends and neighbors to watch for it too.

I will keep you updated on our progress in the next few weeks while we put the final touches on the magazine. If you are interested in advertising in the debut issue of Home in the Northland there is still time. Feel free to contact me and I will be happy to help you. My email address is athomeinthenorthland@gmail.com.

All the best!
